2016 Ysabella Bjork Chardonnay- 91+ Points

Columbia Valley, Washington

White wine from United States

Drinking window: 2019 - 2024

  • (made from Dijon clone 96; aged in 50% new oak, entirely from the Compiègne forest just north of Paris): Medium yellow. Aromas of lemon zest and saltwater taffy. Very rich and thick yet racy as well, with strong acidity and minerality energizing the flavors of citrus zest and honeysuckle. Finishes tactile, plush and long, with well-integrated phenolics despite the very low vine yield. I retasted the superb 2015 release next to this one and it was at least as good as it was last year, showing strong stone fruit flavors and a firm acid spine but not quite the sheer energy of this '16, which will need longer to show its weight.

"The Girls" are made with NO pressing, it takes two tons to yield one barrel, there is no inoculation on either primary and secondary fermentation with no nutrient additions, minimal use of SO2 and the use of an OXO rolling system for lees incorporation instead of stirring. As a result of this extremely reductive winemaking to protect these wines, they actually NEED air to open.
