2016 Gemma Camaryn Chardonnay-92 Points

Columbia Valley, Washington

White wine from United States

Drinking window: 2018 - 2024

  • (made from clone 76, which winemaker Aryn Morell describes as "the most tropical, forward and generous of the Dijon clones"; aged in Allogny oak;): Bright yellow. Fruit-driven aromas of lemon drop and hazelnut. Thick, generous and sweet, showing lovely lemon drop concentration complicated by notes of bacon fat, pine nuts and almond. This fleshy, explosive Chardonnay is already very easy to drink. (Incidentally, I sampled the 2017 from barrel and it appears to possess a firm underlying stony mineral spine and stronger acidity. Morell won't barrel his 2017 Chardonnays until December or January.)

Stephen Tanzer. Tasting date: June 2018

"The Girls" are made with NO pressing, it takes two tons to yield one barrel, there is no inoculation on either primary and secondary fermentation with no nutrient additions, minimal use of SO2 and the use of an OXO rolling system for lees incorporation instead of stirring. As a result of this extremely reductive winemaking to protect these wines, they actually NEED air to open.
