2016 Camylla Loren Chardonnay-92 Points

Columbia Valley, Washington

White wine from United States

Drinking window: 2019 - 2025

  • (from adjacent plots in the same vineyard as the Ysabella Bjork, but made from clone 95 and aged in St. Pallais oak, also from northeastern France; all of Morell-Peña's Chardonnay barrels are made by Tonnellerie Ȏ in California): Bright medium yellow. Aromas of soft citrus fruits and sweet, nutty oak. Thick and sappy on the palate, conveying texture, savory but youthfully clenched flavors of white peach, lemon zest and hazelnut. Finishes very dense and very long, more focused today than the Ysabella Bjork and supported by serious structure. Morell makes these Chardonnays with minimal sulfur additions (the bottled wines have 60 ppm or less of total sulfur), and this wine is showing some very sweet, ripe notes and an almost honeyed richness. Its thickness of this wine reminded me of a top old-style Burgundy.

"The Girls" are made with NO pressing, it takes two tons to yield one barrel, there is no inoculation on either primary and secondary fermentation with no nutrient additions, minimal use of SO2 and the use of an OXO rolling system for lees incorporation instead of stirring. As a result of this extremely reductive winemaking to protect these wines, they actually NEED air to open.
